Can’t Stop the Dancing

Yesterday after work, I immediately dashed to my spot at Greenlake to lay down and read. Any time the sun is out and I don’t have plans, you’ll find me in my “terrarium.”

A couple Summers ago, I was sitting on the grass with my friend Nicole and all of a sudden, a teenage kid walked up in front of us and just started dancing. There wasn’t any music, he was just moving to his own rhythm. He was actually a very good dancer and I wanted to get up and dance with him! Nicole and I were enjoying the random show and clapped him on. Once he stopped, he told us that he was doing an experiment for his sociology class about social norms. He was dancing his way around the lake in front of a variety of people to see how they would react. Apparently Nicole and I were the only ones to not look at him like he was a total freak and he appreciated that.

So yesterday while I was in my spot, I thought of that memory. I had my tunes going and I wanted SO badly to just get up and dance. There were people all around and there was no way I was actually going to do that. I’m confident, but not that confident. I had these thoughts of wishing we lived in a world where we could stop anywhere and dance to whatever was playing in our minds, ears, or over speakers. Don’t you wish it was acceptable to dance anywhere at any time?

I didn’t dance in my spot, but I did sway my shoulders and nod my head a bit. It sufficed for the time being.

Apparently the Universe was listening…

This morning, my boss came out of his office and asked for help on a project for ABC.

“I need to create a video of various people dancing to Justin Timberlake’s ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling.’ Can you gather some people up to dance outside of the plaza?”

Ummmmm…. What are the odds?

I rounded up a small group of people, grabbed the Jambox, and we started the dance party in the elevator down to the ground floor. My boss had his camera on us as we walked outside the plaza and continued our dance party. We saw tourists walking by, but I was so into the moment, I didn’t see the expressions on their faces. I’m sure everyone was looking at us oddly. But we didn’t care – we had the music cranked up and were loving the sunny Friday. Plus, there’s just something about that song that makes you want to dance. I dare you to listen to it and not bob your head. Turns out, the theme of the video is people dancing anywhere at any time. How ironic.

What a perfect way to begin a long weekend. I danced in public, the sun is out, and I’m about to go on a road trip for a weekend of camping. Bliss.

I have this sneaky suspicion that the people who were watching us secretly wanted to join. Dancing is good for the soul!

Have a great weekend, y’all! xo
